About the event
The story follows Erysichthon, a man driven by greed, who stops at nothing to increase his wealth.
Without remorse, he fells a sacred oak grove for profit—an act that provokes the terrible revenge of
the goddess Ceres, who condemns him to eternal, insatiable hunger.
Performed through the expressive movement language of eurythmy, Hughes’ stark and forceful text
gains striking immediacy. Its themes of exploitation and excess resonate strongly with our own
time, yet are tempered by a distinctly British strain of dark humour.
